The Academy Awards is also one of the oldest award ceremonies in
the media and is presented by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences (AMPAS) founded in the year 1972. This academy was founded
by the combined efforts of 36 distinguished personalities of the
film industry. Douglas Fairbanks was elected as the Academy's first
President and it was decided then, that skilled artists of the
Cinema industry will be annually honored. The very first Academy
Awards dates back to May 16, 1929, which was help privately among a
limited audience of about 270 in the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel.
Ever since its inception, the Academy Award ceremony has been
broadcasted live. Until 1953 it was broadcasted through radio and
subsequently the ceremony was broadcasted on television. In 1966,
the Oscar Ceremony was broadcasted in color for the first time. It
was a custom to give the names of the winners to newspapers at
11:00 PM on the night of the awards for immediate publication after
the ceremony. However since the Los Angeles times published the
winners even before the ceremony, this practice was resigned. Since
then on the results are secured in an envelope and revealed only at
the ceremony.
